Frequent Questions

Frequently Asked Questions:

AMTA Sonata & Sonatina Festival FAQs

Q: What is the purpose of this event?

A: Students learn and perform a movement from a Sonatina or Sonata and receive constructive feedback on their performance. This event celebrates the vast and wonderful Sonatina/Sonata literature, plus it’s a great public performance opportunity for student musicians!

Q: Is this festival open to all ages and levels?
A: Yes! We’ve had performers age 6 through college and adult age. All skill levels (elementary through advanced) are welcome.

Q: What is the format for this event?

A: Our festival is held in a recital format. Performers are assigned to a single recital time. Recitals are held at scheduled times from morning to afternoon. When it is their turn, performers walk up to their assigned judge, hand the judge their printed music, walk up to the piano and perform their piece. Performance etiquette (recital dress code and bowing to audience, etc) are observed. Family and friends are welcome to attend!

Q: Is this event in-person or online?

A: Both. Most performers opt for the in-person event, held October 21st this year. There is a video submission option for participants who cannot attend in-person. Registration deadline is October 5th regardless of in-person or video performance. See link below for details.

Q: Is this a competitive event?

A: No. Performers are evaluated solely on their own performance, not in comparison with others. All performers receive a written evaluation and a performance rating (Gold, Silver, or Bronze) from a judge, plus a participant certificate and medal.

Q: Do performers have to memorize their music for this event?
A: Yes, if they are performing a solo work. Performers participating as part of a student duet

group are not required to memorize their music.

Q: I have younger and elementary-level students. What are some Sonatinas I could use?

A: A few composers of earlier-level Sonatinas: Nancy Faber, Jane Smisor Bastien, Lynn Freeman Olson (“Beginner Sonatinas”), Oskar Bolck (“Five-Note Sonatina”), Judith Strickland (“Sail-Away Sonatina”), Timothy Brown (Petite Sonatina”), to start.
